Orgy returns with their Talk Sick EP, popularly known for their breakout hit cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" back in the 90's. Orgy's sound has matured and embraced Industrial Metal and Industrial Rock elements even more deeply into their sound; lyrically the songs on Talk Sick are by and large... pretty standard for rock radio play right now. Edgy enough to warrant only getting airtime on FM rock radio and perhaps a wider berth on satellite radio stations as they also land in Alternative, Alt-Metal, Electro, and even Alt-Pop (Death Pop as the band has self branded their poppier songs) territory on the genre spectrum. But, not edgy enough to be majorly avant garde, but certainly matching the ground Orgy has traveled in the past. By no means is this a bad thing, but molds are not broken here, though the songs on the EP may be substantially harder for casual listeners that only know Orgy from their cover of "Blue Monday" and some of their songs that made it onto film soundtracks in the late 90's and early 2000's.
The band's sound is still their own, they have not become overly commercialized with Talk Sick, they remain a damn good band; and I am looking forward to the next round of their new material especially is this EP is predictive of what they've got cooking.
Musicianship is tight all around, as Orgy has always presented through all rosters of the band, as members have come and gone in their twenty-two year history; the pacing of the seven songs on the EP follows suit with most Industrial albums out over the past couple of years. Which suits the genre just fine, and suits Orgy equally well. The only true issue to be had with Talk Sick are some lyrics peppered through some of the songs on the EP, only once do any of the few uses of the word "bitch" add to the emotional narrative of the lyrics; the other times it is used do not. Given the atmosphere of the industry right now, this is not surprising; it's not an excuse, but it unfortunately is not surprising. It's not enough to damn and/or boycott Orgy, to be sure, especially with much much worse out there; thinly veiled to outright calls to violence against women as retaliation for refusal of romantic or sexual advances and/or infidelity. And while I don't believe in lyrical censorship, there is enough to be seen here of the trend of cramming needlessly sexist terminology and gender driven double standards into songwriting to be called out on it.
